We normally connect text features with non-fiction books, but fiction books can be made better by them sometimes as well.  Think about your lit. circle book.  What text feature would you add to it to make it easier to follow or understand?  Where would you put it in the book?  Why did you choose that feature?  You will be creating a model of this text feature as your final individual assignment for your lit. circle book.

Friendship and trust can develop in spite of a bad beginning. In the story, Shirley finally makes a friend, although the circumstances are quite unusual. Write  about Shirley's new friend and about how they become friends.

Now that your group has had two literature circle meetings, talk about how they have been going.  Write about one thing you think your group is doing well and one item your group's members need to improve as you prepare for this week's meeting.  Please don't mention anyone's name, just make general comments that will help everyone-including me!

In the story, Shirley is finally asked to play a game of ball with the other children. Write how you think Shirley feels during the game. Include details and examples from the text.

Great work responding to each others' comments!  I love it!

What reactions have you had while reading?  Any laughs, gasps, ewwws, whats!?!, etc.?  Find a passage or page number from what you have read so far, describe it, then describe the reaction you had to how and what the author wrote.

Great lessons you all posted!  Good observation that this book isn't about baseball-yet!

Moving to a new home can bring unexpected changes. When Shirley Temple Wong and her mother arrive at their Brooklyn home they discover that life in America is going to be very different from life in China. Describe some of the differences that Shirley and her mother will need to get used to.
